The Grouch & Eligh (G&E)
Say G&E!
Legendary Music | 2009
Say whut? Say G&E! Living Legends The Grouch and Eligh are back with a new episode of the G&E series. 'G’s for the good, E for Elevation, we gon’ touch the world, this is celebration', it goes in the title track’s chorus. 'Follow the way back to the Bay, let’s smart', man-of-the-moment The Grouch, who now partly resides in Hawaii, invites the listener to another great listening experience. In rhymes, with G smartin up, tackling the beat with much flair and cadence and E spitfirin in his well-known abstract style, as well as in beats, with Eligh’s trademark melodic mellowness and irregular, synthesized beat patterns.
Lovely chants in the choruses reminisce, ponder and ease. Guest producer Flying Lotus turns 'Old Souls' in the perfect backdrop for a West Coast trio, as guest star Blu assists G&E in their theory of reincarnation of souls, 'Patience, painted with the blood of the Ancients, before we were forced on a slave ship to build a nation, this soul was plated in gold'. Amp Live behind the boards on 'BOOM' equals a hyphy track whereas the energetic Slug seems easily adapted.
Trendsetting not only in a production manner, both artists touch on subjects which average rappers wouldn’t dare to touch, such as humbleness ('Teach Me The Way'), ignorance ('Denial'), environment ('River Runs Dry' – 'there will be more whores like Mother Nature-yeah right-') in a way that wearing a Greenpeace shirt -like we were 12 years old- would be awesomely cool again.
And so the latest G&E album is taking this rap thing a little bit further, The Grouch is in top condition and clearly infects Eligh with a vibe that is seldom seen on any hip-hop record. Nothing is rapped too much, nothing has been said too much, the beats easily read the lyrics and the lyrics are un-existing without the beats. If 2008 hasn’t proved it yet, than it’s clear now: Living Legends is the crew of the moment, tomorrow and the future.
