Aquil
Blues People
- | 2008

Although issued as a mixtape, the CD listens more like an album. With used beats as well as self-made productions, Aquil showcases in the first place his lyrical skills. Reminiscent of Nas, he flows with ease whether it's a Madlib, heavily jazz- (Fela Kuti) and funk- (The Sylvers) infested, old school ('86 Demotape') or boombap (the Nas homage 'World Is Yours') beat.

Nas-alike, he flows with accurate precision and a finesse with the English language, touching economy themes ('1929'), the history of music ('Blues People', where he celebrates musicians from Pati LaBelle to Bob Marley over Ahmad Jamal and a whooole lot more) or police brutality ('No Justice No Peace' with a nice Ice Cube sample).

This album breathes music history (there's skits from The Last Poets and Howling Wolf) and a piece of mind, introducing us to a well-skilled rapper whose debut album we're eagerly waiting.
