Metermaids
Nightlife
27Sound Ent | 2008

In an attempt to paint the town red, Metermaids duo Swell and Sentence cross the boundaries of hip-hop and add some electronica and guitar riffs to the traditional beats and rhymes. Not that hip-hop is strictly limited to beat machines and rhymes these days, but the amount of live instrumentated rap records is still rather scarce.

And that's one of the advantages of the Metermaids' music. Not afraid of a hook here and there, they try to lift their music outside of the hip-hop box. A wide range of instruments pass the venue, and the link with any indie rock band is never far away, to that extent that they sound radio-friendly at times, but smartly, with arrangements well put together.

The negative point is that on a lyrical level they fall in between. They like to sing, they like to rap, but the end result is black nor white. The messages ain't that strong and the punchlines aren't that sharp, sometimes laughable but never to the extent that one would remember it and requote it to his friends or to the extent that a reviewer would quote them in his review.

All in all, this album is a good listen, it's something different, the music's really energetic (ideal for live performances), some choruses really stick, but what comes in between, the verses, unfortunately don't.
