Mumbles Hip Hop presents
Strictly Underground
Mumbles | 2005

Mumbles Hip Hop, originally only a Canadian on-line store, recently expanded to Mumbles Hip Hop Records. Probably one of the best ways to introduce yourself to the world as a label is releasing a strong compilation with some new names ànd some names that ring a bell. Making people recognize and go 'who-the-heck-is-that' at the same time.

'Mumbles Hip Hop presents Stictly Underground' is 21 tracks deep and needs to put Mumbles and some (Canadian) up-and-coming artists on the map. Some of the highlights are… The jazz influenced 'Take Me Back' by The Specifics: nice production from Think Twice and clever lyrics that really take you back. Muneshine drops some of his trademark verses on the 'City Of Dreams' track, as well as on the dope Phocus (Muneshine & Raks One) cut 'Ya Gotta', laced with nice DJ Realson scratches. Mr. Attic might not sound familiar, but when we say he’s Da Grassroots producer you’ll probably be anxious to check out 'IT' with rhymes from Marvel. Real nice with a dope voice sample and a J-Rawlsesque feel.

Y’all can read our Mathematik and Prizm review to check what we think about their featured songs, since both tracks are on this compil as well as on their own solo’s. The compilation doesn’t suffer from real duds, but at the same time there’s not much tracks other than the one’s mentioned before that really stand out. Rynn D’s track is cool (Beastie Boys sample in the hook!), Heavyweight knows how to lace a 'dirty track' and the Tyme produced 'Follow Me' by Kendo can stand on it’s own two. No need to namedrop all the artists,... you’ll probably hear from them (in the future) anyway.

Whether this compilation will last like let’s say 'Superrappin Vol 1' is not sure. But whether some of the less known cats will make a name for themselves within 5 years sure is. Give this one a listen and rip it to your iPod for your backpackin’ ventures.
