Belgium in the house! 40Winks is an Antwerp production tandem that hooked up with Japanese record label Escapism in an effort to spread their music across the globe. The 'Extended Pleasure' EP is a collection of 7 instrumentals characterized by jazzy moodiness.
Instrumentals that are surprisingly diverse (xylophones in 'The Nightowl's Theme', trumpets in 'City Dweller pt 2' and an electric guitar in 'Wishing Upon A Beat'), and hold a cinematic feeling due to the scratched dialogue/monologue samples (especially in 'Wishing Upon A Beat'). The down-tempo drums, the slow bass lines and hypnotic sounds make this album your ideal company on a lazy Sunday afternoon, preferably somewhere in Autumn; the music's dark but not too dark ('The Nightowl's Theme'), melancholic but not too melancholic ('City Dweller pt 2'), except then for 'Melancholia', the highlight of the album, with a wailing sample reminding of a RJD2 or Blockhead production, and also returning in the outro.
'More Than Loops' was the group's previous release and wanted to make a statement that their production is more than just throwin in loops. And let it be just that; 'Extended Pleasure' is indeed a collection of instrumentals that do not bore for once, but provoke a constant interest by the listener from the first till the last minute. We're not sure what the result would be in case of a full album but we have a slight feeling that we'll have to give them the benefit of the doubt within a few years time.
