Prizm
Soliloquy
Kayce Productions | 2005
So what's up in Canada? One artist who's lookin at the front door is MC Prizm, a 19-year-old MC/producer, trying to find his way in the music business and life. His lyrics are testimonies of his life and you gotta admit, at his age, he got a clear view and he's not afraid to rap about his emotions.
The album reflects a melancholic, moody atmosphere like 'Fine Line (Portrait of a Man)' for instance; 'He used to pray, so peace could last for the moment, all of his life, he was tossed around like sand in the ocean' Prizm raps over a voilin driven beat. He clearly knows how to write a song, drops in a catchy hook here and there and isn't afraid to sing a few lines in the chorus. Or, he gets behind the boards himself and samples Sade's voice for the chorus, like in the title track, a smooth track with nice paino licks. It's obvious Prizm wants to touch the listener's soul, as he does expressively in 'Remember' with again a catchy chorus and piano and violin samples. 'She' is about his dream woman who's not that easy to get like most of the females -read groupies- 'This game loves me, but this girl's lookin unimpressed'. A very nice production is 'Reflections', crafted by Jel, a pretty well-known name in the Canadian underground. In fact, there's not one beat on this album that's below average.
We're clearly dealing with a talent here, a young MC with a vision and a message who tries to make ends with his music. Lyrically he still has to grow, his flow isn't always on-point, his voice doesn't carry him throughout the whole album and tends to annoy from time to time. But give him a few years and he'll be makin a name for himself. Watch out.
