Tom Scott
The Honeysuckle Breeze
Impulse | 1968

Although mainly known for his TV music ('Starsky & Hutch'), Scott is famous among diggers for his 'Today', of which the incredible sax loop starting at 1:38 was sampled by Pete Rock on 'They Reminisce Over You'.

The cover of 'Honeysuckle Breeze' betrays the music on this record. Dressed with shirt and sandals, sitting in grass and flowers and having a band called 'California Dreamers' one needn’t say more. After all this is the late 60s, one year before 69. With a dap of folk, a pinch of rock, lots of jazz and Oriental influences, Tom Scott flips compositions from The Beatles, Donavon, John Coltrane and Joan Baez into adorable, lovely tunes. A saxophonist has never sounded easier and more relaxed than here,
the free-as-a bird composition of the title track, the smooth 'Never My Love' (sampled on Ed O.G.'s 'Skinny Dip' and a vocal interpolation used on Pete & CL's 'It's On You'), the lovely flute on 'She’s Leaving Home', the great opening break of 'Mellow Yellow' but especially 'Today' are topnotch tracks that sound very regular at first but at the end of the day, they linger around in your head.

When recording this, Scott was only 19-years old and at the verge of a long-time music carreer, as he's still recording. This debut is not his strongest work, but still an interesting and rare piece of cross-over jazz.
