Cymande
Cymande
Janus | 1973

Incredible debut album by one of England’s greatest contribution to soul and funk music. Cymande is composed of members that are originally from the West Indies; proof of that is the opening track ‘Zion I’, which is a dedication to the Rastafarian movement, just like the closing song ‘Rastafarian Folk Song’, both songs have typical African drums.

Hip-hop fans will most definitely recognize the songs ‘Bra’ and ‘The Message’, the last song’s sampled on the Masta Ace and Biz Mark duet ‘Me & The Biz’, to name just one. It’s a smooth, rhythmic song with dope horns and a hallucinating bass guitar, the track was a minor hit in the R&B charts. Also ‘Bra’ is a classy song with a hypnotic bass line, a fantastic sax solo and some swift vocals. De La Soul’s ‘Change in Speak’ (of the 3 feet high & rising album) is the most famous exsample that had a sample of the song. ‘Bra’ also appeared on the soundtrack of Spike Lee’s ‘Crroklyn’.

This album’s a classic all the way, with different styles of music mixed together! The album has been reissued quiet recently and can be bought for like 7 euros, check out more on www.cymande.co.uk about the group !
