Melvin Van Peebles
Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song
Stax | 1971
In 1972 Mario Van Peebles made a movie that is without a doubt a legend in the blackxploitation movie era that ruled theatres during the seventies! The other Van Peebles with the funkier name Melvin made this soundtrack to it, probably one of the illest spoken word albums out there!
The album is full of pro-black messages, the slave theme (‘wade in the water’), plain hilariousness and funky pieces of music. A lot of Sweetback’s talking is used by Madlib; what’s more, the whole concept of ‘Come on Feet’ is taken from the third song on this LP. The music will sound familiar because Large Pro used the music of ‘Sweetback’s Theme’, ‘Won’t Bleed Me’ and ‘The Man Tries Running His Usual Game’ as intermissions on Main Source’s ‘Breaking Atoms’. To be specific; for the outro of the song ‘Snake Eyes’ and the intro of the legendary ‘Live at the Barbeque’ track (Nas’ first appearance on wax ).
Besides the spoken word treats, there are two regular songs; ‘Mojo Woman’ and the jazzy instrumental ‘Sanra Z’. Instead of buying the pretty lame remake that was issued a few years ago, you could easily dig for the original piece, that’s an element of the black man’s musical - as well as cinematic - legacy.
