Bobbi Humphrey
Blacks And Blues
Blue Note | 1973

Ah yes, how lovely and sweet this album is. Bobbi is one of the rare female flautists who made fame in the wonderful world of music. She was discovered by the legendary trumpet player Dizzy Gillespie and got the opportunity to make albums for the biggest label in jazz industry. Well jazz, this album, who is one of Bobbi’s biggest successes, is actually more a crossover between jazz, funk and R&B vocals. It’s smooth as buttery and the flutes are heavenly.

Of course this phenomenal fusion album is sampled by the dozen: the most fantastic loop is the one from the title song that was used on KMD’s ‘Plumskinz’ (on the Black Bastards album) and Fat Joe’s ‘Another Wild Nigga from the Bronx’; what a lovely piano lick that is! Also the Digable Planets took a few samples from this record. Another favourite of mine is the song ‘Just A Love Child’, with its great breaks and exceptional singing. Jazztro also digs the electric piano’s and harp synthesizer…and now I’ll just shut up…and listen.
