Minnie Riperton
Adventures In Paradise
Epic | 1975
Unfortunately the ‘angel voice’ joined the real angels and left us too soon in 1979, but she treated us with a few classic songs (of which ‘Lovin You (is easy cause you’re beautiful)' is the most famous one) and fantastic albums. One of the greatest albums she did, is definitely her third solo album ‘Adventures in Paradise’. For this album she connected with Joe Sample on piano and Dorothy Ashby on harp, for other projects she worked with such great artists as Stevie Wonder, the Jackson 5 and Quincy Jones.
The album is a nice amalgam of soul, jazz and folk with a touch of R&B. A definite goose bump song is the opener ‘Baby, this love I have’ of which the instruments were sampled on ATCQ’s ‘Check the Rhyme’ while the vocals were used on Black Star’s ‘KOS Determination’. There’s also a piano piece of ‘Inside my Love’ in Slum Village’s ‘The Look of Love RMX’! The cover is a nice one but the lion on it attacked Minnie leaving her with some severe injuries. Check out more on www.minnieriperton.com about this tragic nightingale.
